The Beauty of the Beginning: What Is My Purpose?
There's something about a beginning that reveals what things were meant to be. Before there was sin, there was peace. Before there was brokenness, there was beauty. Pastor Matt Perry took Love Church back to Genesis 1 to answer a question every one of us eventually asks: what is my purpose? The answer, it turns out, starts further back than most of us look, at the very beginning, before anything went wrong.
Key takeaways:
- You were never an accident. Genesis 1 shows purpose starts with the goodness God designed, not striving or performing.
- Sin broke relationship, not just rules, but grace met guilt at the cross, and grace won.
- Jesus is the new beginning: being "in Christ" makes you a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17).
- God keeps building something beautiful through ordinary people who simply say yes to Him.
- It's never too late to begin again, purpose is received through Jesus, not earned back.
God's Standard Was Good
Genesis 1 doesn't open with rules or requirements, it opens with God creating and calling it good. Pastor Matt reminded us that this is the standard we were made for: not striving, not performing, just walking in the goodness God designed. Understanding your purpose starts with understanding that you were never an accident or an afterthought. You were made good, on purpose, by a God who delights in what He creates.
Sin Broke the Goodness
Of course, Genesis 3 comes next. Sin didn't just break a rule, it broke a relationship. That distinction matters. Purpose isn't lost because we failed a test; it's obscured because sin fractured the connection we were designed to have with our Creator. As the message put it, grace met guilt at the cross, and grace won. That's not just a nice phrase; it's the hinge point of the whole story.
Jesus Is the New Beginning
Here's where the message turns from diagnosis to hope. John chapter 1 deliberately echoes Genesis 1, "in the beginning", because Jesus, the Creator Himself, stepped into creation to offer a new start. Second Corinthians 5:17 says it plainly: if anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation. Whatever has broken down in your story, the beginning is not the end. Pastor Matt pointed to Acts chapter 1 and Lamentations chapter 3 to show how God keeps building something beautiful through ordinary people who say yes to Him. "Every 'yes' to God builds something beautiful," and "the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. His mercies are new every morning." That's not just poetry; it's a promise you can build a life on.
It's Not Too Late to Begin Again
Whether you're just starting your faith or rebuilding after a season of brokenness, this message is a reminder that beginnings are God's specialty. Your purpose was never about earning your way back to goodness, it's about receiving the new beginning Jesus already made possible.
If you're still searching for your purpose, we'd love to walk through that with you. Explore what we believe, or plan your visit to Love Church.
